A Qualitative Analysis of Commodities Transported to Izmir Port By Railways (1901-1908)

İzmir became one of the most important export ports of the Eastern Mediterranean in the second half of the 19th century. The Izmir-Kasaba (Turgutlu) and Izmir-Aydin railway lines, the first railway lines to be put into operation in Anatolia, played an important role in the Izmir Port becoming a remarkable export port as of the second half of the 19th century. These railway lines, which were put into operation in the same year, not only caused a significant increase in the terms of trade of İzmir, but also served the process of peripheralisation, or in other words peripheralisation of the Ottoman Empire. As is well known, railways brought rural production areas into the process of commodity production, while at the same time, more developed economies connected the economies of peripheral countries to them. In this sense, the neighbourhoods in the hinterland of Izmir played an important role in the supply of agricultural products and foodstuffs, in other words primary products, to the Izmir Port from the mid-1860s onwards, which created an economic relationship based on the export of primary products in the trade relations of Izmir and naturally the Ottoman economy with Europe and other Western states. At this point, our research will attempt to explain the agricultural products, foodstuffs and commercial commodities transported by railways from the İzmir hinterland to the İzmir Port from the early years of the 20th century until the Second Constitutional Period and their total annual volumes. From this point of view, the research will address how much products were transported to the Port of Izmir by railways in these years and the importance of these products in making Izmir an export-oriented port. In addition, by using the export figures of Izmir in the relevant years, the relationship between the commodities transported by railways and the products exported from Izmir Port will be tried to be determined.

İzmir, 19. yüzyılın ikinci yarısından itibaren Doğu Akdeniz’in en önemli ihraç limanlarından biri hâline gelmiştir. İzmir Limanı’nın 19. yüzyılın ikinci yarısından itibaren dikkate değer bir ihracat limanı olmasında Anadolu coğrafyasında işletmeye açılan ilk demir yolu hatları İzmir-Kasaba (Turgutlu) ve İzmir-Aydın demir yolu hatlarının önemli bir rolü bulunmaktadır. Aynı yıl işletmeye açılan bu demir yolu hatları hem İzmir ticaret hadlerinde önemli bir artışa sebep olmuş hem de Osmanlının çevreleşme ya da diğer ifadeyle periferileşme sürecine hizmet etmiştir. Bilindiği üzere demir yolları, kırsal üretim alanlarını meta üretim sürecine sokarken aynı zamanda daha gelişmiş ekonomilerin çevre ülkelerdeki ekonomileri kendilerine bağlaması sonucunu doğurmuştur. Bu anlamda, İzmir’in hinterlandındaki mahaller, 1860’ların ortasından itibaren İzmir Limanı’na tarımsal ürünler ile gıda maddelerinin diğer bir ifadeyle birincil ürünlerin tedarikinde önemli bir rol üstlenmiş, bu durum İzmir’in ve doğal olarak Osmanlı ekonomisinin Avrupa ve diğer Batılı devletlerle ticari ilişkilerinde birincil ürünlerin ihracatına dayalı bir ekonomik ilişki yaratmıştır. Araştırmamız bu noktada, 20. yüzyılın ilk yıllarından II. Meşrutiyet’e kadar İzmir hinterlandından İzmir Limanı’na demir yoluyla taşınan tarımsal ürün, gıda maddeleri ile ticari emtianın neler olduğunu ve bunların toplam yıllık hacimlerini açıklamaya çalışacaktır. Buradan hareketle araştırma, İzmir Limanı’na bu yıllarda demir yoluyla ne kadar ürün taşındığına ve İzmir’in ihracat odaklı bir liman olmasında bu ürünlerin önemine değinecektir. Ayrıca ilgili yıllardaki İzmir ihracat rakamları kullanılarak demir yoluyla taşınan emtia ile İzmir Limanı’ndan ihraç edilen ürünlerin ilişkisi tespit edilmeye çalışılacaktır.
