The War of Ottoman-Venice According to Genoese Diplomats Letters (1665-1670), pp. 191-206

The long and wearing Cretan War, which took place in the 17th century, was an important fighting that concerned, along with the Ottoman and Venetian States, many states. The Genoese was one of the states that monitored the development and results of this war. It is particularly important for them to keep an eye on both the developments that would affect their own position and the issues related to the states they vied with, principally France. Within this context, diplomats performing duty in Istanbul and Izmir monitored the events by conveying the developments regarding the war to the center. This study aims to follow through examples, especially the last years of the war, the process of capturing Heraklion and its surroundings by the Ottomans, through the documents in the Genoa State Archive. the embassy and consul letters and reports belonging to the Genoa State Archive (Archivio di Stato di Genova) and the registers in the State Papers collection in the British National Archive constitute the main source of our study. The study utilizes particularly the correspondence of the ambassadors Durazzo and Sinibaldo Fieschi who served in Istanbul in the second half of the 17th century, and the consuls Ottavio Doria and Giovanni Luigi Gentile, who served in Izmir.
