Süleymaniye Mosque And Complex According To Archive Documents Repair Between 1858-1859, pp. 439-467

Süleymaniye, the largest complex in the Ottoman history, is the symbol of Classical Ottoman architecture, built with the advanced technology and ideas of its time. Although significant research has been made on the architectural, artistic, and technical features and the construction process of the Suleymaniye Mosque, which was built by Mimar Sinan with the decree of Suleyman the Magnificent, it is seen that there are not enough studies conducted on the repair activities, which are as essential as its construction in the preservation and permanence of this work. Though it is known that there was no intervention that would cause changes in the volume, geometry, and dimensions of the main space in the buildings within the Suleymaniye Complex, particularly in the mosque located in the center of the complex, various repairs were carried out at different times depending on different reasons in the historical process. The purpose of the study was to obtain information about the repair activity carried out between 1858-1859, which was the most comprehensive among the repairs made in the Suleymaniye Complex in the 19th century and was not included in previous research. In the study, the information obtained as a result of the examination of the reconnaissance notebooks prepared for this repair obtained from the Ottoman archives was evaluated by comparing them with the on-site detection studies. In this repair carried out in the Süleymaniye Complex, it was determined that extensive repairs were made in the interior of the mosque, the minarets, the outer courtyard, and the tombs of Suleyman the Magnificent and his wife, Hurrem Sultan. Moreover, it was determined that new additional spaces such as muvakkithane in the courtyard of the mosque and the tomb keeper room in the tomb of Sultan Suleyman the Magnificent were built during this repair.
