Pedagogical Investigation of The Ottoman Ittihat Schools Curriculum as A Reflection of Reformist Pedagogy, pp. 117-129

Reformist pedagogy, which gained strength in Europe and America towards the end of the 19th century, soon began to spread in Asia and the Far East. This pedagogy, which emerged as a reaction to traditional education, put the child, who was ignored by the traditional education thought, at the center of the education process and made important breakthroughs in the context of eliminating the gap between school and life. This pedagogical orientation occupied both the political and pedagogical agenda in the Ottoman Empire, especially in the post-1908 period. For the intellectuals of the late Ottoman period, who saw the material and spiritual salvation of the empire in education, this kind of education was very attractive. The Committee of Union and Progress [CUP], a well-established political movement that played a very important role in the political and cultural life of the Ottoman Empire, also participated in these discussions both intellectually and practically. It is seen that the society especially encourages private schools that can compete with Greek and Armenian schools. Among these private schools are the Ottoman Union Schools. The aim of this study is to understand how the reformist pedagogy was reflected in the education program of the Ottoman Union Schools, which developed with the contributions of the CUP in the late Ottoman period. The examination on the curriculum of the school revealed that the curriculum of the Ottoman Union Schools, which was established as a private school, showed the reformist lines much more clearly than the other schools of the period.
