"GİDEYİM DE KENDİMİ BİR ÇİĞNETEYİM" YABANCI SEYYAHLARA GÖRE OSMANLI HAMAM KÜLTÜRÜ, ss. 133-149

Türk hamamının kültürel bir miras olarak evrensel hafızada yer etmesini sağlayan Osmanlı Devleti'nde bu mekân sadece yıkanma ihtiyacını gidermemiş aynı zamanda bir sosyalleşme ortamı sağlayarak farklı bir işlev de kazanmış ve toplumun vazgeçilmez bir unsuru hâline gelmiştir. Hamamlar, çeşitli vesilelerle Osmanlı topraklarında bulunma fırsatı yakalayan seyyahlar içinde farklı bir deneyim sunmuş olup kaleme aldıkları seyahatnamelerinde bu mirasın yansımaları görülmüştür. Bu bağlamda yapılan çalışmada Salomon Schewigger (16. yüzyıl), Stephan Gerlach (16. yüzyıl), Brettenli Michael Heberer (16. yüzyıl), Nicolas De Nicolay (16. yüzyıl), Reinhold Lubenau (16. yüzyıl), Jean Thévenot (17. yüzyıl), Jean-Baptiste Tavernier (17. yüzyıl), Philippe du Fresne-Canaye (17. yüzyıl) ve Joseph de Tournefort (18. yüzyıl) gibi yabancı seyyahlarıın seyahatnamelerindeki hamam kültürü değerlendirilmiş ve bulunan malzemeler hamamın adı, çarşı hamamları kimlere hizmet vermiştir, hamamın fiziki yapısı, temizlenme ritüeli, tellaklar, hamamda kullanılan eşyalar, Türkler hamama ne zaman giderdi, hamamların ücreti ne kadardı, hamam adabı ve Topkapı Sarayı'nda hamam başlıkları altında ele alınarak farklı bir kültürün gözünden hamam yapısı incelenmeye çalışılmıştır. Hamam ve hamam sefalarının yansımaları edebî hayata da aksetmiş ve kendileri de içindeki toplumun bir ferdi olan divan şairlerinin şiirine "hammâmiye" adı verilen türle konu edilmiştir.

"I GO AND HAVE MYSELF TREAD UPON" THE OTTOMAN TURKISH BATH (HAMAM) CULTURE FROM THE PERSPECTIVE OF FOERIGN TRAVELERS, pp. 133-149

This place in the Ottoman State, which has provided for leaving a mark on the universal memory as a cultural heritage of the Turkish Bath (Hammam), has not only resolved the need for bathing, at the same time, has become an indispensable component of the society and has acquired a different function by providing for an environment of becoming socialized. The hammams, by various means, have presented a different experience for the travelers who have had the opportunity to be in the Ottoman lands and have been observed in the reflections of this heritage in the travel books written by them. In this context, in the study made of the hammam culture in the travel books by the foreign travelers, such as Salomon Schewigger (sixteenth century), Stephan Gerlach (sixteenth century), Michael Heberer von Bretten (sixteenth century), Nicolas De Nicolay (sixteenth century), Reinhold Lubenau (sixteenth century), Jean Thévenot (seventeenth), Jean-Baptiste Tavernier (seventeenth century), Philippe du Fresne-Canaye (seventeenth century) and Joseph Pitton de Tournefort (eighteenth century), they evaluated the hammam culture. It was attempted to examine in detail the materials found in the hammam structure in the perception of a different culture and were treated under the headings of The Name of Hammam, To Whom Services Were Provided at the Turkish Baths Open to the Public, The Physical Structure of the Hammam, Cleaning Ritual, Tellaklar (attendants who massage and bathe customers at a Turkish bath), The Items Used at the Hammam, When Would Turks Go to the Hammam, How Much Was the Charge at the Hammams, The Hammam Rules of Good Manners and the Hammam at the Topkapı Palace. The reflections of the hammam and hammam pleasure outings were also reflected to literary life and the divan poets, who were also individuals within the society themselves, wrote in their poetry with the genre given the name of "hammâmiye".
