Toponomy of The Settlement Names of The Golhisar Subprovince According to The Detailed Cadastral Record Book of The Hamid Sanjak Dated 1501, pp. 233-248

The Turks began to immigrate into the Anatolian geography in mass in the 11th century and this movement of migration climaxed in the 12th and 13th centuries. The topic of our study, the Hamid Sanjak area was one of the geographies where the Oghuzs had settled intensely. The area had been managed by the Hamidogullari Principality for a century and then it came under the domination of the Ottoman Empire. Following that process the name of the area remained the same and the area had existed as an administrative unit with the name of Hamid Sanjak for centuries. We limited our study to the determination and examination of the settlement names in the Golhisar subprovince, instead of all settlement names in this subprovince which involves a very large area. The settlement names recorded in the study which we grounded on a detailed cadastral record book written in 1501, were transcribed from the Arap-letter Ottoman Turkish into Latin letters and were analyzed in terms of language properties. The settlement names acquired were evaluated semantically and morphologically and the changes these names had undergone within the historical process were revealed. We saw that words taken from foreign languages such as Arabic and Persian were used in the settlement names and the Turkish words were chosen in particular. It was proved that toponomy studies provide important semantic, morphological, phonetic and etymological data at the point of following the historical process of a language.
