Tools Used By the Women of Manastir in Their Daily Lives (1700 - 1730), pp. 199-223

The ware culture is one of material culture components of a society and among indicators of its customs and traditions. It has evolved and changed from society to society in the historical process depending on various factors. Determination of house and household goods shaped based on cultural, religious and geographical structure and a detailed examination about them can help identify the society’s cultural and economic structure and reveal people’s output/consumption habits, day-to-day lives, and living standards. The city of Manastır is referred to as Bitola by the Macedonians, Monastirion by the Greeks of Turkish nationality, Bitolj by the Serbs, Bitolja by the Bulgarians, Monastir by Greeks, and Manastır by the Turks. The city is located at the foot of Pelister Mountain in southwestern Macedonia, southwestern borders the Pelagonia Plain, and in the middle of Via Egnatia, an east-west trade route which stretches from the Aegean Sea to the Adriatic Sea and was used to connect Rome and Constantinople in the days of the Roman Empire. In this study, tools used by women in their daily life in the city of Manastır between 1700 and 1730 were examined. Primary sources of the study were 98 women’s tereke (inheritance records) scattered throughout 14 şer’iyye (registry books) that were kept by the Manastır court between 1700 and 1730. Three of the tereke belonged to non-Muslim women. Based on these, what tools women used in their day to day lives, what they were made from, and how much they were worth were determined. Whether or not the tools changed according to the social position of the women, and how much their wealth was worth was examined.
