Samizade Sureyya and the Lessons to Be Taken From Japan, pp. 615-625

There was an intense mobility of ideas in the Ottoman press at the end of the 19th century and the beginning of the 20th century in particular with the declaration of the second Constitutional Era. The ideals of Europeanization, Islamization and Turkization / Nationalization were passionately advocated with numerous arguments by various segments. The main poles of these ideas were the West, and especially Japan, the star of the Far East and victor of the Russo-Japanese War (1904-1905). Although Japan appeared on the Ottoman agenda in the last quarter of the 19th century, it was examined with intense scrutiny and in depth and accepted as an "example of progress" in the first quarter of the 20th century. In this context, the thoughts of Samizade Süreyya Bey, who developed a passion for Japan at an early age and personally went to Japan at the earliest opportunity to write articles as well as a book on Japanese society and the state structure, is important in terms of Turkish innovation and modernization efforts. Apart from his biography, the intention of this study is to manifest the observations of Samizade Süreyya Bey about Japan, to speculate about his formula for the Turks to find ways to get over the plights, socially, culturally and politically, and his thoughts on "lessons to be learned from Japan".
