MEHMET AKIF'S TRAVEL TO GERMANY, pp. 175-181

When the Ottoman Empire entered the First World War, the war between the Allied Powers and the Central Powers continued at various fronts all over the world with its violence. Especially, the Allied Powers impelled the soldiers trooped up from their colonies, that spoke various languages, religions and ethnicity, to be in the front lines. There were also Muslims among the corps in which the soldiers were brought from Africa and Asia by the British and the French. Even the Russians formed troops from the Turks in their administration and the Muslim Caucasian tribes. Specifically, the British threatened Muslim soldiers with death and cheated them by saying: "The Germans took prisoner of your Caliph. We are trying to save him. Be supportive and earn good deeds" and they took advantage of their ignorance and sent them to the front line. The Germans, having captured the Muslim soldiers who had fought on behalf of the British on various front, started to collect them in the camps created for them. During this period, the Ottoman government was asked for speakers who were good at rhetoric in Arabic and knew the languages of the prisoners. One of these speakers was Mehmet Akif. With this purpose Akif has been brought to Berlin, where he advised the Muslims and carried out various propaganda activities.
